Urnenwerk is an independent German studio, workshop, and brand founded and led by artist Julia Menden. The company is dedicated to creating high-quality, colorful, and highly personalized urns as well as memorial art.
Moving away from impersonal and cold industrial funeral products, Urnenwerk brings contemporary hand-painted art, individual illustrations, and emotional depth to the grieving process. The brand offers unique, custom-made one-of-a-kind pieces, small-batch productions, and specialized interactive workshops where individuals or families can design and paint an urn themselves—as a form of active grieving. Urnenwerk serves both private individuals (B2C) and funeral homes (B2B) throughout Europe. Urnenwerk works with a variety of materials—from ceramics and metal for individually painted one-of-a-kind urns to biodegradable materials for earth and natural burials, such as Friedwald or Tree of Life. In addition, the company is socially engaged and donates 10% of the net sales price of every designer urn sold to local nonprofit projects.
Urnenwerk’s uniqueness lies in the deeply personal, empathetic, and artistic approach of its founder, Julia Menden. Instead of uniform mass production, every single customer urn is handcrafted and hand-painted. In the process, memories, hobbies, and the unique personality of the deceased are transformed into a comforting, colorful work of art.
Urnenwerk offers interactive, private workshops for individuals and families. Under the guidance of Julia Menden, participants can personally design, sketch, and paint the final resting place for a loved one (or themselves). This creative process serves as an active, therapeutic element of the grieving process and helps overcome taboos and fears surrounding death.
Urnenwerk is based in Germany. The creative studio, workshop, and administrative offices are located at Rubihornweg 11, 87600 Biessenhofen. Every individual order is personally handled and hand-finished on-site by Julia Menden.
